The Campaign for Dark Skies Network (CfDS Network) represents a fresh approach to the UK’s anti-light pollution movement. It’s a membership driven networking organisation utilising social media, online meetings, and democratic campaign decisions informed by opinion polls.
The aim is to support people willing to participate in activities for improving the night sky, mainly through local action
Founded in 1989 by Bob Mizon under the British Astronomical Association, the Campaign for Dark Skies (CfDS) was established to tackle light pollution through public education, policy guidance, and community support.
Following Bob Mizon’s passing in April 2023, former committee members and new volunteers came together to continue his vision. This led to the relaunch of the CfDS Network, ensuring the campaign’s mission to protect dark skies lives on.
Supported by the BAA, the Commission for Dark Skies (CfDS), this new network has grown from their efforts. Led by Val Russell of the Newbury Astronomical Society. With the CfDS Network and NAS, we aim to build on the CfDS legacy by embracing its established campaign principles.
